Dengue | Local Health-PHD KC Partnership

Our 2020 Dengue fever education program is now into its fourth month. During the annual rainy season from July to November, the need to prepare for flooding and the expected high levels of mosquito breeding which can lead to dengue fever, is critical. WAH’s partners Lee Siew Yian and Cindy Kartika at The Good Exchange have been instrumental in creating this program, raising funds and being present on the ground for the net distribution and general support

As part of our long-term partnership with the Government Provincial Health Department (PHD), and supported by The Good Exchange, WAH Executive Director Dr. Rany has been busy visiting rural communities to share essential healthcare teaching, and help people better understand how to reduce the risk of infection from the dengue virus.

In 2019, a nation-wide dengue outbreak resulted in thousands of people contracting the disease in Cambodia. 1,000+ in one month in Kampong Chhnang province alone!

Dengue fever continues to increase year-on-year across south-east Asia, with enormous impact on fragile healthcare systems, children’s schooling and the local economy. Spread by mosquitoes that thrive in warm temperatures, dengue is prevalent in 100+ countries. Based on WHO data, there are 390 million estimated infections worldwide.

Collaborating closely with PHD, the integrated program focusses on self-protection, identifying high risk zones, mosquito net distribution and ways to help treat illness, with the goal of expanding the project further with donor support @wah_foundation.
